Healthcare AI and medical imaging
Orebayo Oluwapelumi
At 20, I joined Solatium Limited as an intern through the Solace Abode Care Initiative. During my internship, I worked on a project focused on classifying brain tumour CT images. The project introduced me to preparing medical imaging data, working with pretrained deep learning models, and evaluating their performance for a real healthcare problem. More importantly, it taught me to think critically about the role of AI in healthcare and how it can support, rather than replace, clinical decision-making.
Working on this project strengthened my technical and problem-solving skills and sparked my interest in applying AI to meaningful real-world challenges. It showed me that developing an AI system is not only about achieving good model performance, but also about understanding the context in which the technology will be used and the people it is intended to support.
Today, I work as a Software Engineer at Solatium Limited, where I continue to build software solutions, particularly in the healthcare space. My current experience has given me a broader understanding of how technology is designed, developed, and deployed in real-world environments, while my early research experience continues to motivate my interest in advancing the use of AI to address healthcare challenges.
